Travel Poster
When I first learned Illustrator in Intro to Design Software, I was assigned a project where I was expected to make a poster featuring a foreign city. By then I was barely a beginner designer and user of Illustrator. Now, two years later, I wanted to compare my current skills to back then, prompting me to remake this travel poster.
The limits were to keep faithful to the pallet, use the same subject and body copy. I let myself change the font and composition.
First I sketched the Basilica on paper. Then I drew the building in Illustrator, tracing over my sketch. I did so in black and white, focusing on the values of my reference image.
Finally, I did a “paint by numbers” approach to coloring the poster. When I first made the palette, I started with a set of grey values. Then I took the three colors of my palette and expanded them into shades and tints so that each color had a value that corresponded to the grey pallet. This kept the image unified and better helped me represent the forms in the vector painting.
Investors Associated Hiring Ads
Investors Associated is a company that owns residential and corporate property around the Madison and Sun Prairie areas. They needed a set of posters to draw in new maintenance workers for their properties.
My brother used to work for IA, and he often came home with funny stories from his job. Inspired by the stories, I used humor as the basis for my design hook. Taking the context of each story, I molded the type, photographs, and other subtle elements to enhance the humor of each poster. I kept the overall style restrained to represent the corporate environment and to contrast the humorous copy. I took and used photos of him to ground the posters with a narrator for each story.
