Server Guide Booklet

Type Design   //  Print Design  //  Illustration

Altar serving is a ministry of serving the church that any young man can start, even in boyhood. It is a broad set of jobs, each needing to be performed in exact ways and times. The Server Guidebook aims to assist priests, deacons, and M.C.s alike in training new servers and helping experienced servers with reviewing the ministry. It achieves this while also celebrating Catholic Culture, and inspiring reverent work.

To make the guidebook interesting and memorable, I kept it short, easy to read, and visually engaging. Drawing inspiration from Catholic traditional imagery, I used print making for illustrations and diagrams. With a strong set of fonts, and a bright, yet limited palette. I built a hierarchy to organize information and keep the book easy to navigate. Working with the writer, I used call outs and mild humor to make messages stick.

The Print Illustrations started as sketches. I transferred the sketches onto rubber like linoleum blocks. The blocks are soft and easy to carve. I carved out the designs to make stamps. Once cut, I rolled ink onto the stamps and printed out the illustrations onto paper. Once the ink dried I digitized the prints in Photoshop, turning them into black and white bitmaps. Some Illustrations I edited or adjusted, either erasing out imperfections, or adding to the illustration. With the bitmaped prints I could easily place, scale, and color the images to my needs in InDesign.

Final version

I want to especially give thanks to my brothers Joseph and Josh. Joseph was the copywriter of this booklet. Without his writing skills, this brochure wouldn’t even be a fraction of what it is today. I want to thank both Josh and Joseph for their hard work of proof reading, feedback, and brainstorming with me. Your hard work is appreciated.
